Rogue Trader - 'The One Big One' Human Renegade

Hello, something a bit goofy for todays blog post, a project I started back in 2014 and lost during our house move only for it to resurface when I was bored of my current paint jobs and was in the loft looking for an interesting distraction, let me introduce you to my take of the Rogue Trader 'Human Renegade'. This character is pictured in the (1st Edition) Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook on page 172 in an image labelled 'Human Renegades'.

This image has always been a favourite of mine with the 'The One Big One' character sitting there in what could be described as a space adventurers tavern looking all menacing with his flash mate and a pair of pints and some documents on the table, hit contracts, bounty instructions, who knows? The image has always been popular Oldhammer circles and I know of at least two other paint jobs out there of this character on RT01 metal marines, fans on various forums have asked questions like "who are these guys", "what's their story" and "are these still a thing", myself they have always reminded of the kicked out penitent marine character in one of the early 40K novels, out adventuring on some distant planet without any care for the grimdark, I am sure the creative writers out there could knock up a great story.

The build was simple enough, chop up and reposition a RTB01 plastic Space Marine, fill with green stuff, the end product a pretty rough looking sitting down miniature, I built him a seat out of plasti-card and das promo modelling clay. There's a cool looking rifle is depicted in the image which I attempted to copy by chopping up a variety of early plastic weapons, sticking them together and filing the gaps with plastic putty, I enjoyed giving the rifle a wooden stock, for the backpack I used an RTB01 one and shaved down the grill bits to get a smooth top.

Paint job was the fun part as the character doesn't follow Space Marine Codex schemes so I was forced to come out of my comfort zone and get creative with my paints, plenty of dark washes and weathering was required to try and achieve desired outcome, armour graffiti is a bit rough and I really struggled gettting the 'KISS THIS' on the end of the gun barrel.

Back in 2014 I started to build up the pieces to make a whole diorama of this image and have a rough build started on the other character using the first plastic Space Ork shoulder pads, for the table I have an old lead piece from Citadel Miniatures early days which sizes up nicely and for the room I have an even older resin dungeon room made by a company that probably doesn't exist anymore, you'll see more details on all of this when I pick the project back up, happy to here any ideas that might influence build.

On to the photos... and there's quite a few as I was struggling to get that golden angle, enjoy!

The finished miniature has gone down quite well Twitter so I thought it deserved an immediate blog post.

Thanks for joining me on this fun project, more to come soon

Rogue Trader - Mark VI Techmarine - Fan Sculpt

Welcome back! In this post I bring you my fifth blog post featuring fan sculpts that are either a direct tribute to classic Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader artwork or a have an unmistakable Oldhammer style, this one is an Adeptus Astartes Techmarine in Mark VI Corvus armour, sculpted by the very talented James Sherriff in 2017, it's  a beautifully crisp metal cast and if I get the terminology correct it's either true scale or heroic scale which is more akin with the modern Space Marines some of you paint today, the sculptor has added lots of beautiful little details, the wrist scanner, fuel tank and lump hammer, I was instantly sold when I came across it.

Assembly is simple as it's a single cast, I mounted it on a modern round 40mm base there was no other way really due to the stance, the Techmarine comes without a powerpack and an Oldhammer community member gifted me an resin Mark IV powerpack sculpted by fan sculpt master Drew Williams (who has featured on this blog previously) that sizes up nicely with this miniature.

Now usually I get a lot of messages on FB and Twitter questioning where one get hold of the fan sculpt featured in a post and in this case this miniature is available from Ye Alchemist at a very affordable price, go get one, half the pubs are still closed and it's cheaper than a couple of pints of craft beer :D

Painting I went for the Flesh Tearers scheme that I seem to be painting all my Space Marines in lately, I have tried free hand painting the chapter icon several times and have never been happy with the result so I went eBaying and purchased some Flesh Tearer vinyl sticker decals and some 3D printed curved shoulder icons for my Rogue Trader era Space Marines, in this case I used the vinyl sticker which was very malleable when warm and only required a bit of tidying up with black paint.

Now to the miniature.

Confrontation 40K Space Marine - Fan Sculpt

Hello, today I bring you the third Oldhammer fan sculpt miniature I have recently painted, most of you will be well familiar with this miniature from it's Facebook exposure, blogger, etc and probably have this miniature in your backlog.

This miniature is based on the Les Edwards painting 'Confrontation 40K' which depicts a Blood Drinker's chapter Space Marine stationed on the world of Necromunda blasting an attacking mob of Scavvy gangers with his bolter, the painting appeared on the cover of White Dwarf 137 May 1991 (the one with the Confrontation combat rules in it) and in the Blood and Iron book of Les Edwards art produced by Games Workshop Books in 1989.

The miniature was sculpted in 2020 by Drew Day Williams of Satyr Art Studio (give them a follow), keep an eye on him as there are some superb retro inspired miniatures being produced, this miniatures details are spot on, the ornate shoulder pad, the gauntlet, face, earrings and bolter look exactly like they should, he's even done the Blood Drinker's icon on shoulder pad and gauntlet!! The miniature was distributed by some very nice chaps of the FB Oldhammer groups.

Painting I went for colour scheme of the Space Marine in the painting with plans to build a diorama base for him to slot into that represents the scene in the painting, my reference picture was from the Blood and Iron book and I didn't realise how washed out it looked compared to the polished version on the Les Edwards website so my miniature might be a bit more muted when compared. I also had to go for the green gold gauntlet I could swear Les used the old first Citadel Colour Gold, do you remember the one? it had a tinge of green and was green when separated, his armours battle damage was fun and easy to copy from the painting, the chapter icon was freehand as I couldn't find a Blood Drinker's transfer/decal anywhere, I am a bit out of practice, not entirely happy with it.  Lastly I had to fight temptation to 'ard coat gloss this miniature to try and get the glossy finish the Power armour has in the painting but in the end I went with a few highlights and a coat of matt varnish.  Oh and I wimped out on the Necromunda writing on the shoulder pad. :D

Now for the photos.

Space Marine Mk.14 Bullock Jet-Cycle - Fan Sculpt

Hello! it's my wife's late night yoga session here so you know what means I get a nights blogging in after painting my session, today's post features an Oldhammer fan sculpt of the quirky Space Marine Mk.14 Bullock Jet-cycle, the original miniature first appeared in White Dwarf 96 (December 1987) in the Chapter Approved article on page 51 and it was sculpted by Bob Naismith, this one was sculpted by the wonderfully talented Drew of Satyr Studio who didn't have the miniature for reference when sculpting and had to follow the art, how hard must that have been. I think these miniatures might be appearing on TrollSoup soon so give them a follow.

The original Jet-cycle was designed for plastic RTB01 Imperial Space Marine to ride and there was also a mail order release (2nd Flyer 1988) of a single cast Imperial Army rider which if you turn to page 189 in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rule book you will see him flying in the 'a column of penal warriors led by an astropath' diorama, I have included my Imperial Army rider 1988 paint job in some comparison photos below as all my past Space Marine biker have been stripped long ago.

The fan sculpt Jet-cycle is a 3 part kit unlike the original which was 2 part, cast in resin and has that true scale feel, the rider is a metal cast, the Jet-cycle build was simple enough with a tiny bit of filling here and there, it comes without bolters so I fitted two modified RTB01 bolters. The rider is beautiful he has all those cool features of the classic Rogue trader era Space Marines, vents, studs, etc, the miniature has 4 parts and I had to paint all these first then fit the body to the bike followed by arms and back pack, I had a few disasters during this stage which I put down to poor planning and method, I think I should of maybe added the bolters to the Jet-cycle as the last step, I have have another 2 of these and next time I will try a very different approach.  I went for the colour scheme of my Flesh Tearer's slow burner project and give the Jet-cycle and rider lots of weathering as I imagine he would both get dinked a lot by debris while whizzing about blasting stuff.

Below are some comparison photos and you can really see how crude the original Jet-cycle was, I don't think it reflects the superb illustration in White Dwarf 96, the later 1989 versions are just odd, I have absolutely loads of both versions in the loft but I am not sure I'll ever visit them again while I have another 2 of these superb fan sculpts still to paint.

Took this comparison photo 2 years ago so glad to be shot of that blue carpet in the old house :D

Space Crusade - Ultramarine Commander

Hello, during lockdown and with the boy at home, home schooling went to pot and out from the loft came the 1990 M&B classic Space Crusade, my son loved it, I saw it as an education activity and we went on to play many scenarios and some homebrew ones of my own, we used some originally painted miniatures from the early 1990's and some unpainted figures.

When I got the box down from the loft of holding and opened it up I found three sets of the game crammed into one box and the 1991 Mission dreadnought expansion with those awful Tarantula guns.

The box graphics with those photos of garish painted Space Marines gave me the urge to have a go at painting one so in my boys honour I did and here's the result, I might do some more one day maybe during another lockdown.

Now go get your Space Crusades out your loft's and treat the kids.

Rogue Trader - RT01 Space Marine Field Police

Welcome back, I am currently working my way through last RT601 Space Pirate range of the Rogue Trader era and with 10 of 24 miniatures complete so far it's going well but it's hard work batch painting so I'm having a quick break from them to play with a few single pieces and some revisit old ideas while waiting for the enthusiaum for them to come back.

One of these old ideas that really got me stoked was the Adeptus Astartes Space Marine Field Police and after a bit of a conversation on Twitter I popped up into the loft and dug out my first attempt to show the Oldhammer crowd, after rooting through the myriad of boxes I finally found him. This 1987 RTB01 plastic Space Marine was converted to hold 2 bolt pistols and painted in Humbrol black enamel gloss with the helmet painted in the first Citadel Colour blood red, you remember the one? it was more like light carmine or pink, I have included pictures of him below for a laugh.

Weeks after I was thinking surely I could do this bygone concept more justice so I went through my collection of RT01 Space Marines miniatures looking for what I thought would make the best Field Police Marine, there were several candidates but in the end I settled for Brother Leanman (also listed as Brother Lestrade later on).

The Field Police rank appeared on the beautifully illustrated page 168 of the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook but was forgotten in the background descriptions and rules which was a shame but it didn't stop us painting them.  There has been modern revisits to the concepts including by Forgeworld but that's all too new for me.

During my paint job I tried best to capture the feel of the Rogue Trader illustration, I always find black extremely hard to get right but I think it works, he carries an interesting style of carbine bolter which seems well suited to his rank, the helmet came out a bit cartoony which I like and I tied him to my Flesh Tearers with the chapters icon on his shoulder pads badge plate.

RT01 Imperial Space Marine - Treacher Marine

Hello,
Todays classic Oldhammer miniature is the Rogue Trader RT01 Imperial Space Marines Treacher Marine’ released in April 1988's spectacular White Dwarf 100 and sculpted by either Mark Copplestone or Aly Morrison not sure which one.

RT01 Imperial Space Marines ‘Treacher Marine’

This miniature was the first Traitor Marine Citadel Miniatures ever released and eventually found it way into the Realm of Chaos era Chaos Renegades range along with the other 'not so' Limited Edition renegades.

Treacher Marine (No. 12) - RT01 Imperial Space Marines - April 1988 White Dwarf 100
LE101 - Chaos Renegade Marine - May 1988 White Dwarf 101 (although pictured on the cover of White Dwarf 99)
LE102 - Traitor Legionnaire - June 1988 White Dwarf 102

This is the only miniature from the range that doesn’t have personal name all the others are Brother <insert name>, or Rank <insert name> and unlike some of the Space Marine Renegades pictured in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue trader Rulebook (see below) this one is definitely aligned to the ruinous gods of Chaos.

He has the 8 pointed star of Chaos on the shoulder pad of his Mark VI power armour with the other shoulder pad and helmet that may have been mutated by the warp, chitinous or alien in appearance.  He is armed with a Bolt gun with Chain blade bayonet.

Space Marine Renegades

I went for the Warhammer 40,000 2nd Edition colour scheme of the early Night Lords before all the lightning livery I have always had a soft spot for the Night Lords and built a small force in the 2nd Edition era out of a mix of Rogue trader miniatures and 2nd edition Chaos, I may revisit these one day.
