Hello, back by popular demand!I'm back working on my Flesh Tearers Space Marine chapter, and progress is going well. This is such a rewarding project, taking me right back to my teenage years, hanging out with my mates in a dimly lit room, chatting nonsense around a table while painting RT01 Marines with enamels, I shall not mention the smell :DI'm not far off finishing all the RT01 miniatures, and once they're done, I'll be putting more time into painting the other Marines from that era.Of course, I keep getting distracted by other projects! I've recently finished 17 Oldhammer C Series C15 Orcs (I'll post these up when I find the time), along with a load of D&D miniatures and various other fun little projects.

First up, we have Brother Craig reloading his bolter. You can clearly see the bolts in the magazine, which look remarkably like bullets!
Craig appeared in a White Dwarf 99 (Mar 1988) advert and is credited to sculptors Aly Morrison and Mark Copplestone. I'm not sure which of the two sculpted him, although I could take a guess.
Craig is a really popular miniature and will set you back quite a few quid these days. This might have something to do with his appearance in a fantastic illustration by Russ Nicholson, showing Craig hiding alongside his camouflaged Space Wolf squad as they prepare to ambush an Ork Warbuggy.
The image below is from page 139 of the 1989 Warhammer 40,000 Compendium, although I'm sure it appeared somewhere else first. Interestingly, Craig is holding a scanner or binoculars in the illustration rather than the bolter magazine we see on the miniature.

Following on, we have Brother Matthews, armed with a power sword and bolt pistol. He has a proper techno-barbarian look about him, with his fantasy-style sword, hooded robes and big beard. He'd make an excellent candidate for a Space Wolf, Dark Angel or even an Inquisitor.
The miniature first appeared as No. 4 in White Dwarf 100 (Apr 1988), and was given the name Brother Matthews on the RT3 Flyer from the same month. The sculptors are listed as Aly Morrison and Mark Copplestone.
I believe this may be the first distinct Space Marine Chaplain miniature produced, as he has the Chaplain's icon sculpted onto his shoulder, matching the symbol depicted on page 169 of the Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader rulebook. We wouldn't see any more Chaplain miniatures until White Dwarf 108 (Dec 1988).

Next up, we have Brother Dimshade, originally listed as an Assault Marine with Chainsword in White Dwarf 93 (Sept 1987), before being given the name Brother Thaw on the RT1 Flyer (Feb 1988).
This is another great example of Bob Naismith's chop-shop style, with the Marine sharing the same body as Captain Huron Grimm and the head of RT7/RT502 Mercenaries Breakout Con.
I've added some funky KiL graffiti to his chainsword, along with a Rogue Trader-era jump pack, which I find an absolute joy to paint. This brings my jump-packed Assault Marines up to a five-man squad!
There's an illustration on page 255 of the Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader rulebook that appears to depict Dimshade. The miniature shown in the White Dwarf 93 advert also seems to match the camouflage scheme in the illustration, which is a nice little detail connecting the two. |

Next up, we have Brother Morris, wielding a multi-melta one-handed and a bolt pistol in the other. He's festooned with skulls, including skull studs on his pauldron. What's not to love? A true Angel of Death!
He was released as No. 9 in White Dwarf 100 (Apr 1988), where he appeared painted as a Legion of the Damned Marine. He was also given his name on the RT3 Flyer from the same month.

Next up, we have another Space Marine from White Dwarf 100 (Apr 1988), listed as No. 11 and later named Brother Byrne. Armed with a plasma gun and bolt pistol, he sports a big, nasty scar across his head. He's a pretty straightforward miniature, really, but a classic all the same. He's also the third and final plasma gunner from the RT01 range that I've painted.

Going back to White Dwarf 80 (August 1986), we have one of my all-time favourites, C100 Imperial Space Marines Marine Firing. Sculpted by Bob Naismith, like all the C100's he eventually found his way into the RT01 range.
Like all the C100 Marines, he has a backpack sculpted as part of the miniature. He's firing one of those odd looking laser rifles, complete with a combat blade, lamp, sight and plenty of cabling. When the LE2 Marine was later reimagined, this weapon was given the name Disruptor Gun.

And finally, we have another one from the C100 Imperial Space Marines, aptly named ‘Marine’. He shares the same story and equipment as the ‘Marine Firing’ miniature.
I've added some devotional KiL KiL graffiti to finish him off! |
