Rogue Trader RT601 Adventurers Space Amazon - Take 2

Hello, for years now I have been mostly painting individual Oldhammer era Citadel miniatures and when I finish a miniature I rarely revisit it let alone paint another copy unless its stripping down one of my awful teenage jobs from the 1980's but today's miniature is one of my all time favourites so I had another go and decided to take my time and put a bit more love into it.

You may of seen my previous attempt back in February 2013 on the Space Amazon - RT601 - Adventurers blog post, I was never happy with this paint job, I had envisioned her as a sci-fi version of Amazon Gothique in an eternal champion type multiverse and not a character in her own right.  Many of you will own the book Ratspike by John Blanche and Ian Miller which was published by Games Workshop in 1989 and will be familiar with John Blanche's painting 'Amazon' that features in the book along with lots other amazing pieces, I have included a picture of the Amazon painting below.  The Amazon in the painting has a real likeness to Siouxsie Sioux of 'Siouxsie and the Banshees' that great British post punk alternative group, I really wanted to try and capture this feel in my latest attempt and pay homage to the painting.  The Space Amazon of the RT601 Adventurers range like Kinky Chaosette/LE15 Chaos Amazon and Lune are other wonderful examples of John Blanche's art in miniature form.

When it came to painting I started by blocking all the colours in very neatly before moving on to multiple washes, some blending then I did some nice highlights and the miniature could passed off as finished but to me it wasn't Blanche's Amazon.  I opened up the Ratspike page and studying it I wondered if I could achieve all that outrageous detail on a miniature, it was time to drop my own painting style and go a bit crazy which I found very technically demanding the characters clothing is so chaotic, embroidered basque, multiple different animal fur types, Zebra, Leopard, Dalmatian, brown/white and black furs, other quirky details like in the painting where she has a stocking on one leg, tights the other, both with different patterns,  it's details like these that really mess my brain up but I got there in the end.

I hear you say stop waffling and show us the miniature so here go enjoy.

C30 Amazons - Koka-Kalim

Hello, today we are going way back in time for my latest paint job which comes from the Citadel Miniatures 1984 C Series C30 Amazons range, I've had this miniature since my childhood, it came as a single miniature blue blister and it has survived umpteen miniature purges due to it being stashed away in my unpainted sci-fi adventurers box, the lead was almost pitch black when I pulled it out for prepping.

Named 'Koka-Kalim' this miniature was depicted on the cover of the 1984 Second Citadel Compendium (see below) fending off Northmen raiders with her laser pistol/needler in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle scenario 'The Shrine of Rigg'.

I attempted to paint the miniature as what I could see on the cover art of the compendium, all the colourful details were just to nice to resist, the pink 1980's new age haircut, green parrot feathers, blue trim and gold jewellery, the pose is beautiful too, I think this miniature is a real oldhammer gem.  She will fit nicely with my other citadel Amazon's and the punky miniatures of the Rogue Trader era.

Space Amazon - RT601 - Adventurers

Hey, I am slowly updating the photos of some of my older posts and here is the first updated post, I hope you enjoy.

Here is today's first miniature from the RT601 - Adventurers range, a Space Amazon, see here also Rogue Trader Adventurers, Mercenaries, Pirates - Collectors Guide.

I am sure this model was based on John Blanche's 'Amazon' painting, my picture is taken from my Ratspike book.

John Blanche's 'Amazon'

She makes a great addition to an Inquisitorial warband and reminds me of characters from the Eisenhorn and Ravenor novels.  She is available to use whenever we play the W40K RPG Dark Heresy.

Another similar miniature is the LE15 - Chaos Amazon model another miniature based on another one of John Blanche's paintings, this time 'Amazon Gothique' which was featured on the front cover of White Dwarf 79, it was a limited edition miniature and shared it's blister pack with 'The Warlock' from the cover of the Fighting Fantasy magazine 10.

And here is my painted version of Amazon Gothique or Chaos Amazon (LE15).

The evolution of the Amazon miniature produced by Citadel Miniatures and as you can see below the Realm of Chaos era Champion of Slannesh shares many attributes of the original Amazon.

Amazons over the years

** Update September 2017 **

A nice new version of Amazon Gothique for a Necromunda 2017 advert, just artwork at the moment, shame if it ever comes out it will be made in plastic :(

And here with have it the new Necromunda Amazon

** Update January 2019 ** my version of Belladonna - Noble Bounty Huntress

This next miniature is also worth a special mention, available at Hasslefree Miniatures sculpted by Kev White, she named 'Jenova' and as you see below definately draws influence from Amazon Gothique.

Last one for now, another Amazon Gothique tribute by Geoff Solomon-Sims of Oakbound Studios.

Other Amazons spotted

Apparently she was coming to AoS once upon a time

There are a couple more painted versions of this miniature here and here.
