Painting Rust - Brogar Brainbeater

Hello Friends, in this post I would like to share a simple technique I used for painting rusty armour, this is the first time I have ever used it on a standard sized miniature but often used it on my Imperial Guard tanks back in the mid 1990's when we were playing Warhammer 40k 2nd edition.  I needed a short break from painting Chaos Beastmen so I when I went through my storage box of chaos miniatures and selected victim for this experiment, who but none other than 'Brogar Brainbeater' fitted the bill with his heavy armour and halberd, he started life as a F5 Marauder and was eventually discontinued and incorporated into the Chaos Thug range, I really like this heavily armoured miniature and wanted to give him the degenerated look of a knight who had turned to chaos.

So this is how I went about it.

What you need:
An old Brush
Tub lid with rim to keep your crushed pastels on as they are really messy
White Spirit (I used Winsor and Newton but any should be fine)
2 artist pastels Orange and Terracotta both crushed
A can of Army Painter Platemail primer spray (only £3 in my model shop)
Vallejo Oily Steel acrylic paint

Method:

  1. Clean up miniature as usual.
  2. Spray with Army Painter Platemail primer.
  3. Constantly wetting the old brush with white spirit,  dip and mix with the Terracotta crushed pastel and paint liberally over miniature getting it in the recesses while leaving some raised areas in the original platemail colour, it is important to keep dipping your brush as the pastels soak up the white spirit in lightening speed and it will go dry.
  4. do the same again with the crushed Orange pastel working it on top of the Terracotta but leaving some Terracotta still visible.
  5. Any raised areas where you wanted to show the original metal but went over it with pastels revisit and carefully paint over with your metal colour in my case Vallejo Oily Steel.
  6. Paint in your details, horns, belts, etc
  7. Base as usual and Acrylic SPRAY varnish, do not brush varnish or you will be left with a reddy brown mess as the pastels go powdery when dry and will reactivate.
  8. You should now be finished, quick and easy.

Here the final miniature I hope you like the results I think it is quite effective.

I hope you enjoyed this post and let me know if you give this technique a go.

C27 And C38 Chaos Beastmen Painting Continues

Hi, today we have more C27 BeastmenC38 Beastmen and  CH4 Chaos Beastmen fantastic old school miniatures from the 1980's, see more on the pre-slotta miniatures over at the Collecting Citadel miniatures wiki. I am really enjoying painting these miniatures with the goal of having a 'true' beastman regiment their variety and concepts are wonderful, some silly but I am hooked and have amassed quite a backlog of these miniatures to paint so keep your eye on this blog for more to come.

C27 Carrion Man, CH4 Lash, C27 Skarrim
C27(?) Sheep/Lamb Man, C38 Beastman, C38 Slug Man

First we have C27 Carrion Man a truly hideous miniature, a variation of an old Runequest Broo miniature, he will be going in  the front rank and I would like to thanks Jason Gill for this trade directly through the blog, a true trader, fair and honest.  While painting this miniature I noticed he is sporting ancient Spanish Celt-Iberian headgear, I know this as I have painted 100's of ancients over the years.  Those Rhea feet look mean too, +1 attack?

Next we have 'Skarrim' another C27 Beastman from the Third Citadel compedium, this one is brutally armed with two meat-cleavers, dogged faced drooling for blood definitely a follower of Khorne, Beastman berzerker anyone?  I think this may be another Kevin Adams sculpt.

Skarrim - front

Next we have C38 Beastmen Slug man another revolting creature who seems to have his previous head of a man in his chest. There is another slug man in this range.

Now we have a later CH4 Chaos Beastman 'Lash', it's nice to see a bow armed Beastman, I have several of these to mix into my regiment.

Lash - front

Back to C38 Beastmen we have 'Beastman', a very old miniature, I am not sure what sort of beast he was supposed to be mixed with, you decide.  He has a Warhammer tucked in his belt and a very nice shield with a demon head as the boss and screaming faces around the rim. i have seen another variant of this miniature with a different head, which seems to be the case for a lot of this range.

Now we have my mystery Beastman, I said on the Oldhammer FB group that I think it is Kevin Adams sculpt as the armour markings are identical to this C27 Boarman's, it also small chaos star on his armour, here is my painted version, I pondered on what animal he could be mixed with and settled on a Sheep. I have not found him in any early catalogue of the age but he did appear later here.

Sheepman or Lambman?

Orlygg's took a photo of some of Chaos Thugs in Bryan Ansell's Miniature Collection and amongst them were lots of miniatures not from the Chaos range one example was the Wood Elf Champion with axe and Orc head, I love this miniature and it never occurred to me that he would make an excellent Chaos Thug so I got him out of storage and painted him for my Thug regiment. Pale skin and pink hair a perfect thug of Slaanesh.

Remember If you have any old beastmen doubles contact me and we may be able to trade, a couple of peeps have already. :)

On The Workbench - October 2014

Hi Folks,
Apologies for my lack of posts, here are few photos of what is happening on the workbench at the moment to tide you over until I finally finish the miniatures (hopefully soon), as many of you will know fitting miniature painting in when you have a seven month year old baby in the house it is quite tough but the odd half hour sessions I manage to fit in are starting to bear fruit.  I probably started too many miniatures at once.

This is all work in progress.

Here are C27 Beastman 'Shearmone', C38 Beastmen 'Crab man', 'Camel man', 'Owl man' and an old Warrior Maiden 'Mace lady' from the Citadel collectors series.  All they need is basing.

Next we have Chaos Wizards from the Citdael collectors series and a couple of Chaos Familiars 'Daemonet' and 'Lune', these miniatures still need plenty of work.

Next we have miniatures that are still being prepared, two cats given to me by Cheetor over at Sho3box (thank you mate) and two Squats from the RT601 Adventurers range, 'Squat Miner' and 'Squat Engineer'.

I hope to have these painted and up on the blog soon,

Thanks for visiting and get following.

The Painting Continues... Slowly

Hey  Friends,
Followers of this blog will know I am slowly easing my way back into the Oldhammer world after the birth of our baby boy and it killed me to miss this years BOYL after attending the first year, this years constant coverage was brilliant, a big thank you to all involved. Now fitting painting miniatures into your baby routine is very hard but the odd half hour when I wasn't exhausted I managed to slip into the spare room and knock out a few more Chaos Thugs to add to my regiment which is now 32 painted strong, only another 40+ unique miniatures to do, I also managed to prep up loads of C27 and C38 Chaos Beastmen which will stand alone from my RoC era Chaos Beastmen as a unit of 'True' Beastmen.

First we have a converted 'Crusher' from White Dwarf 82, you might have noticed that I have painted another version of this miniature before but this conversion with eye stalks was in a trade from Robtimus Prime over in our Oldhammer Trading Company Facebook group and I felt it was too nice to dismantle so I cleaned it up with Dettol and painted it.  I finished him off with a classic Arcane Armorial shield transfer.

Next we have 'MadAxe Martin' another classic Chaos Thug who first appeared in White Dwarf 92, strange that such a brute would have the name Martin but then I remembered the superb historical/fantasy movie Flesh and Blood 1985 with Rutger Hauer as the hero Martin, really if you haven't seen it watch it asap it's brilliant.

Next we have 'Punter Dunter' another White Dwarf 92 Chaos Thug, not much to say about this guy, crazy new wave hair cut and a severed head.

Next we have 'Stab Stab' another White Dwarf 92 Chaos Thug, I like this guy I think he gets his name from the two daggers tied to his spear shaft, a totally original chaos weapon.

And last but not least an old school Chaos Beastman, I think he resembles a Tortoise but some say he is a Turtle but I think not, I don't seem to be able to find any reference to him so if you have a link to an advert/catalogue page send to to me please on the comments.

Summer Time Chaos

Hello Friends,
I am back from my family summer holiday, after catching up on what I have missed I read another wonderful post by Orlygg over at the foremost Oldhammer blog Realm of Chaos 80's I received a plug to my blog, it energised me to get my arse in gear and add another post, here are some of the latest miniatures I have painted for my Realm of Chaos Warband which I can say is now developing into an army, I have made loads of trades over in the Oldhammer Trading Facebook community and have a horde of new Chaos Beastmen and Thugs to prep and paint when I get the time.

A big thank you to the boys in the Oldhammer community Facebook group for pointing me to Picasa, it has improved the quality of my photos tenfold.

I do remember owning and painting this miniature first time round but it sadly ended up on eBay many years ago, this Realm of Chaos Champion I traded from Orlygg over a year ago and the miniature finally got a lick of paint, it is up there with my favourite Khornate Champions and reminds me of Master Blaster from Mad Max III, with attributes of chaos armour, mark of Khorne, mechanical body with tracked leg, manikin, chain-fist (and probably other ones I haven't spotted) what's not to love about this miniature. I think this champion is great for any Warhammer and W40k Chaos army and makes a great servitor or indentured slave usable in any Dark Heresy campaign.

The original RoC Champions of Chaos advert in White Dwarf 107 where he features see 021912

Next up is a 'C' series C35 Chaos Warrior 'Fenris' I originally painted him for a D20 Slaine RPG campaign I was running and just spruced him up a little to add to my constantly growing Chaos Thug horde, he definitely made his name in the barbarian fighting pits of the chaos wastes, I just love all his scarification markings and piercings.

Now we have more of my Beastmen of Khorne or Khorngor, the original RoC painted miniatures never cease to fire my imagination as I eagerly attempt to reproduce the RoC feel with my own paints and style, here are the original adverts from White Dwarf 105, 107 and my painted versions.

Probably my all time favourite chaos beastman he really captures the feel of the beastmen on the front of the RoC StD book and many of the illustrations inside.

I am sure this Khornate beastman started life as the Bloodbowl Werewolf Star player.

As usual I like to break up the painting theme and do something slightly different so I painted a Bob Olley RoC Nurgle  Beastman, like Marmite you either love them or hate them.

Now everyone knows and loves this CH4 chaos beastman 'Hesh', he pops up all sorts of places including scenario sets and illustrations (see below) I shall add him to the regiment of chaos undivided beastmen I am slowly building up.
