Forces of the Imperium - Imperial Assassin and Friends

Hello, todays Oldhammer miniature blog post features an odd mix of Imperial miniatures which I painted in between projects. It's going to be a short post as there are only 4 miniatures.

Imperial Assassin and friends

First up we have the 1989 Assassin with Power Sword and Bolt Pistol which appeared in White Dwarf 118 October 1989 as part of the Forces of the Imperium range, which I think was sculpted by Jes Goodwin, the range mainly consisted of Inquisitors but also featured a Rogue Trader and this female Assassin.
It's a bit of a lackluster miniature, she is posed lurching forward as if to strike with her power sword, I went for a black colour scheme as you would expect for an assassin, I found the pose and colours didn't lend themselves well to photography.
I think she has a variant of sorts the Forces of the Imperium Rogue Trader  and I think this is evident in the legs, it feels like she was probably sculpted on top of for the Rogue Trader or even she was just the dolly jazzed up a bit.

Next up we have 'Lord Revelation' from the Wargame Foundry Empirical Absolution and Liquidation Squad, I've already talked about these a bit here when these previous unreleased Rogue Trader miniatures were discovered and cast up. He is a prototype Adeptus Administratum Scribe as they appear on in the illustration and description on page 140 in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader book.

Next up we have 'Captain Repentance' another rediscovered miniature from the Wargame Foundry Empirical Absolution and Liquidation Squad, he appears to be an Inquisitor or maybe a Rogue Trader. This one is a variant of the 2000ad Strontium Dog Johnny Alpha miniature and appeared in Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader book on page 11 and an illustration on page 82 bears some resemblance.  I went full 1970's sci-fi on the paint job with lots of bright colours. I have seen a couple of decent paint jobs on this miniature out there and I recommend you check out Curis's lovely version.

Lastly we have a Ratling sniper from the first Rogue Trader release from March 1989 sculpted by Alan Perry for the new Imperial Guard release.

Forces of the Imperium - Inquisitor with power weapon

Hello, todays Oldhammer miniature blog post features the 1989 Inquisitor with power weapon which made it's appearance in White Dwarf 118 October 1989 as part of the Forces of the Imperium range, I think it might have been sculpted by Jes Goodwin, the range mainly consisted of inquisitors but also featured assassins and a Rogue Trader who I have previously blogged here

The miniature like other Inquisitors of the range has really interesting armour, personalised, baroque styling, is he wearing foot clamps for zero gravity fighting or are they bionic feet? What is going on with the powersword it is so phallic was the sculptor having a laugh here?  My favourite feature is his unique backpack with cloak that you don't see used on any other Rogue Trader era miniature, the downside of this backpack is that it completely obscures the back of the miniature (photo below).

Now you don't see many painted examples of this miniature out on the web for inspiration so I just went a bit crazy, I put away the usual reds and golds I would lean towards for an Imperial Inquisitor and dug out some more radical base colours, citadel colour hawk turquoise for his main suit then for the main plates vallejo game color plague brown which is more of a mustard colour and a vallejo royal purple cloak, the power weapon and power fist I painted with a blue green iridescent paint.  I think his colour scheme gives him an aquatic feel, maybe he's off cleansing xenos Saharduin on the ocean planet of Piscea or having some other underwater adventure.

Not long after the photo below all this lovely detail was covered up forever by is backpack and cloak.

Forces of the Imperium - Rogue Trader

Hello, todays classic Oldhammer miniature is the only Warhammer 40,000 1st Edition Rogue Trader character miniature released and I don't recall any other until recent times, the miniature was released alongside some other great characters as 'Forces of the Imperium' in White Dwarf 118 October 1989, I don't know who sculpted this miniature, I don't recall any art depicting him (but I haven't looked that hard), it's just one of those odd bod miniatures that wasn't produced for long and that is why it's quite scarce.

Dressed in a long trench coat with integrated body armour, a cap with goggles and the most amazing Imperial two-headed eagle on chest giving him the protection of Emperor in battle, he appears to be armed with a Power Sword akin to a light sabre not unlike some the RT01 Space Marines have and nicely sculpted Bolt Pistol without magazine clip, I guess the ammo must be in the grip handle. Pretty basic paint job as the trench coat pretty much envelops the miniature so lots of leather tan colour, tried having a go at the light sabre effect it required Citadel inks and a cotton bud to work the colour out.

If you can give me any knowledge about this miniature please chuck it in the comments, speculation is fine too.

I think you will agree the new Blackstone Fortress Rogue Trader 'Janus Draik' certainly shares similarities with this classic miniature like the imperial eagle emblazoned on his chest, long pointy sword and the long coat.

Ordo Malleus Daemonhunter

Hi Friends,
Todays classic Rogue Trader miniature is an Ordo Malleus Daemonhunter, I painted this miniature while working on the Forgeworld Solomon Lok which I can say I am not enjoying painting although the sculpting on this miniature is inferior to Solomon Lok, on Lok there is just too much detail, you need to be of Golden Demon standard to do it justice.

I love the ecclesiastical outfit and personal power armour he wears, adorned in runes and Imperial emblems, he is armed with a Daemon sword and a holstered PSI-cannon.  If you remember from the all fluff in the RoC SoD book I still laugh now remembering to even see an Ordo Malleus Daemonhunter meant you faced extermination only Adeptus Astartes were exempt as it was seen as a waste.

White Dwarf catalogue advert below, labelled slightly wrong as Inquisitors with force weapons, which if you look at the miniatures they are clearly carrying Daemon weapons.  Luckily I own all three :)

I also painted one of the many broken plastic Tyranids in my Advanced Space crusade box, just to see if I could restore the miniature to a decent standard, it might be the start of another project for the future.
